Spiritual Vertigo

This is an old blog series I wrote about a year ago, but I feel it is still very relevant. So, for the next 4 weeks I will post one of the Spiritual Vertigo blogs on Tuesday (NZ time)/Monday (US time).

Have you ever had one of those moments where, something happens that shakes the foundation of what you believe to the core? You are left feeling dizzy and disoriented and your not sure what is up from down, right from wrong. This is what some would call “Spiritual Vertigo”. At first, your faith is tested and you are not sure if what you have always believed is true. You go through many emotions: anger, defensive, sad, scared, etc. For some you stay in these areas of life for a long time and it causes chaos in your life, especially in terms of your faith. Have you ever experienced this? My guess is, if you haven’t experienced it, you will one day. But this experience isn’t bad in and of itself. In some senses we all need to be testing our faith. We all need to be growing in our relationship with God and in what we know is true and right.

Not too long ago I experienced this spiritual phenomenon. But it didn’t happen how some would imagine. I did not experience this mass free falling spin through the words or questions of man, but rather it came from the Word of God Himself. It happened when I began to open my Bible and let the Word read me. It made me vulnerable, it made me scared, it shook my foundation to the core. It showed me all the areas of my life I thought I knew about or thought I could hide and revealed the truth to me. It opened my eyes to the truth of the message of Jesus and his will for his people, but in particular me.

When you read the message of Jesus, I mean truly look at it with open eyes ready to learn, you discover that Jesus was all about rocking people’s worlds. His message was all about shaking foundations to the core. Because it is only when our foundations are broken (when we are broken) can we be built up correctly, with a firm foundation. Jesus was all about sending people into “Spiritual Vertigo”.

Sometimes I wonder if we realize how revolutionary Jesus’ message truly was. So over the next few weeks I would like to write about different ways Jesus message was revolutionary in his day and ways that his message is still revolutionary today. I hope it challenges your faith. I pray that it shakes the core of your foundation. I ask that Jesus lay down his firm foundation in your life and let the revolutionary message of Jesus run through your veins. Because when he does, there is a freedom that comes with having been shaken and having walked away from it changed. So may you not just read the message of Jesus, but may it read you. Get ready for the ride of your life.

Get ready for “Spiritual Vertigo”!
